Ara Peterson
American, born 1973
Represented by up-and-coming galleries.

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

Bringing the tradition of Op Art to three dimensions, Ara Peterson crafts sculptures and installations that, while static, suggest movement with their optical patterns. Peterson studied film and animation, but his current practice centers on the assemblage of hundreds of laser-cut, individually colored wood pieces into tubes, columns, wall reliefs, and other forms—through repetition and subtle variation, his works seem to swirl, morph, and oscillate before our eyes. Peterson was a founding member of Forcefield, an American noise band and art collective, along with Jim Drain; in 2012 he collaborated with Drain to transform a warehouse space into a dizzying installation of spinning pinwheels, decorated in his characteristic palette and patterns.
