Arthur Ou
Taiwanese, born 1974

Concerned with visual culture and the roles of modernism, historiography, and documentation within it, Arthur Ou works mainly in photography, although his oeuvre includes sculpture and installation. The theme of East vs. West runs through much of his work, as illustrated by “Earthworks”, a series of small black-and-white photographs depicting earth mounded onto wooden pedestals. The works simultaneously reference outdoor earth sculptures and the ancient Far East tradition of bringing extraordinary rocks found in nature inside the studio for contemplation. Likewise, in a collaborative installation with Alice Könitz, Ou evoked a Chinese garden pavilion with a video projection and immersive lattice structure, whose patterns reference Chinese design.
