Arup Das
Indian, 1924–2004
Arup Das, born in West Bengal in 1924, is a graduate of the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta. Known for his expertise in figurative painting and acclaimed mural work, Das places human figures at the forefront of his artistic expression. His paintings aim to depict man as a social and historical being, influenced by his cultural and natural surroundings. Das is proficient in working with oils and watercolors, but truly shines when combining various media in his creations. He skillfully employs a wide range of shades to bring his human figures to life.
With 22 solo exhibitions in countries such as Japan, the UK, and Canada, and participation in 24 group shows both in India and internationally, Das has established a remarkable presence in the art world. Recognized for his talent, Das has been honored with the National Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1957 and the President's Silver Plaque in the same year. His works are featured in the collections of prestigious institutions including the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, Sahitya Kala Parishad, New Delhi, and the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society, New Delhi.
Arup's passing occurred in 2004.
