Asha Zero
South African, b. 1975
Asha Zero is an elusive trickster-like artist with a Banksy-esque mystique The artist is known for intricately layered trompe l'oeil paintings, which often fool the viewer into thinking that they are torn bits of paper fashioned into what resembles a collage. In fact, they are highly realistic, painstakingly crafted paintings, with no pasted elements or actual collage at all. His work brings to mind art movements such as Dadaism, Nouveau Réalisme, Superrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Punk, Hyperrealism, and Street Art.
Asha Zero effectively renders post-industrial, terminal identity, blip-cultural imagery, depicting a deconstructed global village populated by posthuman citizens. Asha Zero engages with the undercurrents of a collective socio-political worldview, documenting a consumer-based society surrounded by commercial glitches, noise, and static.
