A musician, sculptor, and painter, Athanasios Argianas creates music inspired by art and art inspired by music. In his work, he explores the possibilities of translating sound into form and vice versa, explaining that his “translations are devoid of any ambition to objectively represent one thing into another . . . the work is in the middle of these things.” Argianas’ “Song Machines”—elegant metal sculptures etched with short, evocative phrases—exemplify how he makes the audible physical, their forms derived from musical scores.
