Atsushi Fukui paints scenes of familiar or fantastical spaces, populated by young girls, forest animals, trees, and mushrooms. In his youth, Fukui was fascinated with American and European science fiction, comics, and cartoons—which continues to influence his approach to painting. Fukui’s work characteristically features serene moments, depicted with fine detail or outlined forms, and darkly saturated colors. In the 2000s, Fukui’s works were based on episodes or images from his own life, such as interior spaces, landscapes, and urban settings. After, his themes became more metaphorical, mythological, and based upon fictional narratives of his own creation. Fukui has also illustrated David Sylvian’s poetry, and regularly makes album cover art for the music label samadhisound.
