Attasit Pokpong
Thai, b. 1977
A rising talent in Thailand’s contemporary art scene, Attasit Pokpong employs watercolor and oil paint to create vivid, unnerving portraits of Asian women. Pokpong uses portraiture as a window through which to explore his subject’s true feelings. Drawing from Pop art and Surrealist techniques, his masterful skill is especially evident in the soft, almost blurred appearance of his figures’ skin. The women in his paintings are often shown in sharp contrast to their surroundings, as in Purple Face (2014), where a woman with purple skin and hair against a pale blue background gazes directly at the viewer. Pokpong’s rendering leaves audiences reflecting on what feelings may lie beneath the surface. The artist’s early work typically shows bustling city scenes in his home country. He has exhibited extensively in Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Japan.
