Bert Teunissen
Dutch , born 1959

Dutch photographer Bert Teunissen spent 15 years traveling through Europe documenting homes built before World War I and the elderly people who live in them. These “Domestic Landscapes”—the title of the series and a monograph by the author— capture a vanishing world of simplicity, authenticity, and old world detail that dates back to the time before electricity. As such, the photographs are lit only by natural daylight, something that Teunissen considers a subject of his photography. The stunning effect calls to mind the warm glow of Old Master paintings by Vermeer or Rembrandt, as, the artist has said, “the kind of light I used in those pictures is the same kind of light as painters used in those paintings—it's old and antique light, the kind you rarely see anymore.”
