Betsy Eby’s paintings channel her passion for music into lyrical abstractions. Working in encaustic, Eby applies layers of pigmented wax in painterly gestures. Her markings are deliberate but elegant and kinesthetic; they flow into one another, almost like notes on a score. Eby also claims Japanese landscape painting as an influence—apparent in the compositional unity achieved through the rhythm of her marks. Eby’s sensibility for space is felt through her ability to create depth in her canvases. “I want to make work that’s not about necessarily making an object but more so about making a space,” she has said.
