Birgit Graschopf
Austrian, born 1978

Birgit Graschopf captures the world from above in aerial photographic compositions, exploring the way humans organize themselves as analogous to the microcosmic systems found in nature. One of many examples of Graschopf’s unemotional voyeuristic style, “Urban Creatures” is a series of photographs that map old town centers around southern Italy—with the churches that once shaped the original layout of the towns removed. Graschopf presents these alongside images of congregating fruitflies, setting all of her imagery against black expanses. Graschopf’s removed perspective conveys a sense omniscience, the all-seeing-eye over the grid-like world and its surreal reality, also evident even in her earlier pencil-and-paper works.
