Bob Mizer was an American photographer and filmmaker who is best known for his groundbreaking magazine Physique Pictorial, which mixed photographs and illustrations with political critiques. In 1945, the artist established the Athletic Model Guild and within the span of his nearly 50-year career, he created a body of work that both reflects and distorts American ideals of masculinity and sexuality. Mizer photographed thousands of men, including cultural icons such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Andy Warhol. The photographer’s influence can be seen in the works of Robert Mapplethorpe and David Hockney.
