Borna Sammak
American, b. 1986
Borna Sammak looks closely at everyday urban life, kitsch, glitch, and pop culture as source material for sculptures, paintings, installations, videos, and mixed-media wall pieces that offer hallucinatory visions of the real world. Before studying at New York University, Sammak’s interest in art began as a teenager with drawing and an apprenticeship at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia. Street signs, advertising slogans, clothes, and popular cartoons get the Sammak treatment in his “Not Yet Titled” series (2015–). For one standout work, Not Yet Titled (Couch) (2018), Sammak transforms the commonplace piece of furniture into a 50-foot installation of twisting upholstered black-and-white stripes. Sammak’s work has been internationally exhibited and is in the public collections of Atlanta’s High Museum of Art; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami; and Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria.
