With a background in music and performance, Brendan Fowler explores the function and construction of images. From 2001 to 2007, the Los Angeles–based artist focused on improvisational music and performance-based works that critically explore the performer-audience dynamic. Beginning in 2008, he started working with his archive of personal photographs, printing and exhibiting them in ways that defied photographic conventions to explore the production and dissemination of images. In his “Crash Piece” series, Fowler balances sculpture and photography by presenting a stack of framed photographs “crashed” into one another—stacked atop and spliced together. The works do not cohere to any conventional narrative; instead they deconstruct the systems and protocols that enable photography to convey meaning while also communicating a sense of their maker and his life.
