Camila Macedo
Brazilian, born 1973

Influenced by her participation in bands, the DIY aesthetic of punk and underground music, and commercial illustration, Camila Macedo produces richly colored, cartoonish paintings populated with children and adolescents. Macedo lingers over the colors and patterns of the textiles she paints, rendering a dress, a jacket, or a pillow in intricate detail, in contrast to her spare treatment of the figures themselves. Her figures seem pensive, preternaturally self-possessed, and isolated from each other and their surroundings—reflecting a moody vision of the experience of childhood.
