Carl Andre
American, 1935–2024
Carl Andre’s pioneering approach to sculpture helped define the tenets of Conceptual and Minimalist art. Andre produces rigorously simple sculptures by arranging materials such as bricks, lumber, and metal or stone tiles into unfixed geometric forms on gallery floors. He has referred to himself as a “post-studio artist” because he does not alter the industrial materials he uses to construct his work, and he fabricates his pieces on-site instead of in the studio. Andre has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Dia Beacon, the Museo Reina Sofía, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. His work has sold for seven figures at auction and can be found in public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Stedelijk Museum, the Tate, the Centre Pompidou, and the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art.
