Exposing the properties of light and its interactions with different materials, Carol Bennett explores luminosity through paintings and glass works. Her paintings of female swimmers underwater, with their diffracted forms and suspended rays of light, position the sun’s rays as material and tangible, while her glass works, which feature colored glass and metallic coatings, react to changing natural light and incorporate the surrounding landscape. Based in Hawaii, Bennett is inspired by the way minor events can coalesce to affect greater change. Having previously worked as a stage-set designer and billboard painter, Bennett became accustomed to working with small details to build a larger work of art that is interesting both up close and from afar.
