Biography

Charles Garabedian filters myriad influences through his fertile imagination to create bold, mythic paintings. Born to refugees of the Armenian genocide, Garabedian draws upon his own heritage, as well as Greek mythology, for his work. As he explains: “When I first encountered The Iliad, and Greece, and Armenian manuscripts, I immediately felt at home with them.” In Apollo and Daphne (2009), he re-imagines the tale from Ovid’s Metamorphoses by showing the god and the nymph lying together by a river, both visually transformed by love.
