Biography

The photographer and filmmaker Charlie White explores the fraught relationship between the American teenage identity and popular, consumer culture. He once summarized his approach, saying, “I’m an adult looking at the adolescent image as a vehicle for cultural analysis.” His color photographs are produced in series and include closely observed portraits of girls at a casting call; comparison studies of teenage girls and transgender men; and a loosely narrative suite highlighting the life and times of a grotesque, invented figure, who the artist calls “Joshua.” In his carefully staged images, White mimics the look and feel of television sitcoms, teen and adult magazines, advertisements, and other visual imagery from pop culture. White characterizes his work as operating “within the vernacular of popular teen imagery,” adding it “points outside of this language to something more problematic, a visual tension.”
