Chip Allen’s abstract paintings—consisting of descending squares, fields of color rendered in layers of paint, and surfaces stripped to reveal layers underneath—all tell a story about the way they were made. The artist, who has worked as a draughtsman for the Sol LeWitt Foundation, creates patterns resulting from his strict adherence to self-imposed parameters. However, these clearly defined compositions compete with loose spills and expressionistic brushstrokes that add a dramatic tension between chance and control. In one series of works, featuring rectangles nestled within one another, Allen shuffles pots of colored paint with his eyes closed before making a predetermined series of marks and seeing how the image develops.
