In Christina Benz’s video and sound installations, she creates scenarios steeped in tension that ultimately finish with anticlimactic conclusions. The short videos, either comical, sinister, or both, often feature repeated false starts or failures. In Trapped (2006), a woman swims in circles underwater; at first her movements appear playful, but they quickly transition into a frantic attempt to escape. Pool (2005) features a surreal landscape with nude women sitting on diving boards above a frozen pool, which is set beside a freely flowing lake. The women remain nearly motionless as the shots change and eerie crackles and tones play over the video. Benz’s absence of narrative structure and subsequent lack of fulfillment challenge our present-day expectations of instant gratification.
