Christopher Joy

Biography

Christopher Joy is an important figure in the New England art scene, as much for his challenging sculptural practice as for his role bringing together artists as a prolific arts journalist and curator. In the studio, Joy works at the boundary where painting meets sculpture, creating both wall-mounted works and free-standing combinations of off-the-shelf and found objects—artistic hybrids that reference architectural forms. “Hanging on a wall, separated from our own physical surroundings, viewers look at and into paintings,” he has said, “but interaction with sculpture is different. When it's on the floor, as opposed to a pedestal, it's part of our environment, like furniture. We can look through it rather than just at it.”
