Biography

Video artist Claire Hooper uses her cinematic skills to explore mythology in a contemporary urban context. Her videos are immersive fantasies that invite viewers to explore or even experience “the way in which the presence of the gods acts upon the passive observer.” Nyx (2010), her best-known work, follows a Turkish immigrant in Berlin as he takes a psychedelic, intoxicated subway ride home on the underground subway, or U-Bahn. The trip becomes a metaphorical voyage through the underworld, as he meets several gods and goddesses—dressed in contemporary garb—who variously help and impede him on his journey.
