Colin Blakely

American, b. 1973

Biography

Trained in mathematics and photography, Colin Blakely documents the landscape and people of his native American Midwest. He works in both color and black-and-white, producing both un-manipulated, carefully framed photographs and heavily manipulated ones, his interventions intentionally obvious. A crucial component of his work, Blakely’s titles serve as interpretive cues. In The Anachronism of Basic Instinct (2006), for example, he captures a dog looking primed for a hunt in the middle of a domesticated suburban landscape, restrained by a leash.
