Cynthia Packard
American, b. 1957
In a fragile yet bold pursuit of substance and spirit, Cynthia Packard’s abstract and figurative paintings demonstrate her love and knowledge of form and gesture. Works such as The Garden (2016) consistently express her emotional reaction to her subjects and the fundamental elements of color, line, and form. Focused on the process, she intuitively paints through a vigorous method of sculpting thick layers of paint to convey an honest feeling. Recurring subject matter includes her family, garden, animals, and still lifes. The great-granddaughter of Impressionist artist Max Bohm and daughter of landscape artist Anne Packard, Packard says her artistic practice has been influenced by her family as well as Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism. She studied sculpture and art history at the Massachusetts College of Art and under Fritz Bultman after graduation.
