Daiga Grantina
Latvian, b. 1985
Artist Daiga Grantina creates large-scale sculptural objects and suspended installations that often reflect elements found in the natural world and resemble massive terrariums. Grantina uses a range of materials in her pieces, including plastic, metal, and fabric, producing tension through juxtaposition. Her distinctive work has continuously propelled her career to new heights. In 2019, she represented Latvia at the Venice Biennale with a site-specific installation titled Saules Suns (2019). Grantina has had solo exhibitions at Palais de Tokyo, and has participated in group exhibitions at the Musée d’Orsay, and the Latvian National Museum of Art. In 2020, New Museum presented “What Eats Around Itself,” Grantina’s first institutional solo exhibition in the United States. The massive, vibrant installation featured in the exhibition encapsulates the essence of Grantina’s meticulous assemblages, which are often made up of contradictory physical features.
