Description
Acrylic on gessoed plywood. 61" (diameter) x 1 ¼ inches (154.9 x 3.2 cm) In FFFFFFunkadelic Flower, Muller paints six Funkadelic albums of the same label design, with their different hype stickers, price tags, printing errors, and each a slightly different shade, with respective wear and tear. The era of George Clinton and Funkadelic marks a real time and a real attitude that can be felt from the track list, with title after title like "Super Stupid" "What Is Soul" "Wars of Armageddon" and "Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow." Muller makes all the tracks similarly readable.  He also loves that these albums list the artists on each track, with the repetition of George Clinton, George Clinton, George Clinton as a heartbeat of how instrumental and influential his music was to later Hip Hop. (b. 1964, San Francisco, CA) creates paintings and installations that are rooted in his deep fascination with music, how it infiltrates and shapes our identities, and the communal dialogue it generates across cultures. 's paintings depict the circular labels of assorted vinyl albums and singles, drawing upon the artist's endless fascination and encyclopedic knowledge of music and its capacity to shape both individual and cultural identities. He culls resonant records from the ‘20s through the ‘90s, some familiar and others forgotten, tapping into shared poetic moments and a collective dialogue.  His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in the United States and abroad, including solo shows at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA; Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, MN; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León, León, Spain; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, Ca; and Saint Louis Art Museum, St. Louis, MI. His work is represented in the public collections of the Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, TX; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Henry Art Gallery, Seattle, WA; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, Ontario; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY, among others. PROVENANCE: Courtesy of the artist and Blum & Poe, Los Angeles/ New York/ Tokyo
