David Maisel
American, b. 1961
David Maisel is an American photographer and visual artist whose work explores the impact of humanity on its environment. The painterly imagery in his photographs capture aerial views of marked contemporary landscapes, and the corroded remnants of our manmade past.
His most recent series, "The Fall", focuses on three specific areas of Spanish landscape, "Borox", the borox-rich mining and agricultural region of La Mancha, "Vicalvaro", the abandoned developments on the edges of Madrid, and "Fuensalida", the abstracted croplands of La Mancha.
Maisel earned his BA from Princeton University, where he studied with Emmet Cowin, attended the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, and received an MFA from California College of Arts. His work is exhibited internationally and collected in major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, LACMA, and The Victoria and Albert Museum, and he was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in 1990.
