A former billboard painter, David Rothermel approaches abstract painting with both a graphic and historical sensibility. His predominantly acrylic-on-panel paintings are composed of vertical bands of color that butt up against one another, each section the result of a series of aesthetic decisions. Rothermel continually paints over each section, with some bands of color forming gradients, while others are virtually monochromatic. His earlier work featured vibrant, evocative landscapes inspired by those of New Mexico.
