Using ubiquitous materials such as fibreboard and spray paint, David Ryan creates abstract wall sculptures that probe the intersection between craft and mass production, referencing the glossy colors and lines of cars and electronic gadgets, while increasingly revealing evidence of the artist’s hand. Ryan’s methods include laser-cutting curvilinear shapes into synthetic panels, which he then spray-paints with bold colors and layers to create concentric forms or strata redolent of maps that distort viewers’ perceptions of depth and contour. In recent years his works have become less polished and more roughly hewn, with jagged lines and what appear to be cracks or ruptures in the surface, and layers of brightly colored felt.
