Derek Boshier
British, 1937–2024
British Pop artist Derek Boshier began creating darkly humorous drawings, collages, sculptures, and paintings of falling men long before he completed his MFA at London’s Royal College of Art, where his classmates included David Hockney, Peter Blake, Pauline Boty, andR. B. Kitaj. Drawing on imagery from popular culture, such as Kellogg’s cereal and Pepsi logos, Boshier’s artworks criticized post-war consumerism. His work began garnering attention in 1961 when he exhibited in the landmark “Young Contemporaries” show as an art student; his painting from the following year, Man Versus Look, Versus Life, Versus Time, Versus Man About (1962)sold at auction in 2019 for £237,500. Boshier famously designed the album cover for David Bowie’s Lodger (1979), and created a collection of drawings and paintings in collaboration with The Clash in the same year, titled CLASH: 2nd Songbook (1979). Bowie remained a close friend of Boshier’s and became a major collector of his work.
