Didier Massard photographs detailed tableaus of his own meticulous fabrication, inspired by locations across the globe. He draws his subjects from his own imagination, calling each image “the completion of an inner imaginary journey,” although not without acknowledging collective romantic notions about the regions he references, from sites of antiquity to dense jungles. Massard produces only a few images per year, spending months considering his optical manipulations, which have been likened more to “magical realist” painting than photography due to their ethereal light and romantic sense of illusion.
