Dona Nelson creates paintings in which the material canvas suggests an inability to contain the composition—for example, when the composition is “too big” or when there is “too much of one color.” In her art, Nelson is interested in the painting’s ability to embody the nature of a visual, emotional, or intellectual experience. Often likened to the heroes of Abstract Expressionism, Nelson’s process references Barnett Newman’s steady zips and, further, reflects a seemingly more meditative approach to Jackson Pollock’s drip paintings.
