Doreen Garner

Giving form to the historical precedent for tolerated abuse of Black individuals and erased narratives of both trauma and excellence, Doreen Garner executes historically fraught and psychologically sensitive subjects with emotional urgency and technical elegance. In projects driven by the long and ongoing history of anti-Black exploitation in medical experimentation, Garner combines meticulous research and material complexity, creating uncanny forms of traumatized bodies, which she incorporates into performances and installations. The New York-based multidisciplinary artist uses medium to both highlight abuse and subvert abusers, for instance, performing endoscopic surgery on a facsimile of J.
