Duncan Hannah
American, 1952–2022
Painter Duncan Hannah is known for his nostalgic landscapes and portraits inspired by classic films and adventure novels. He graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1975 and developed a figurative, narrative style of painting influenced by mid-20th century painters like Edward Hopper and Fairfield Porter. His work was included in the seminal 1980 exhibition “The Times Square Show,” and he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2011. Hannah was an improbable figure in the New York art and punk scene of the 1970s —more likely to show up to the club CBGB’s in a necktie than a leather jacket —but his anachronistic style got him noticed; and he later starred in underground films. His paintings seem more fitting for another era, depicting Old Hollywood film stars, vintage European sports cars, and idyllic English landscapes.
