Biography

Eberhard Havekost’s enigmatic, quasi-abstract paintings are based on tightly cropped, digitally altered photographs. Havekost’s approach is rooted in the painting process rather than a narrative impulse. Remaking the photographic fragments as larger paintings establishes a unique relationship between source material and end product—rather than a source for his subject matter, his photographs serve as a sort of sketch of an underlying structure, a launching point for a more improvisational practice. “The point of departure for my paintings is an emotional quality or a factuality,” Havekost explains. “In other words, something I can feel.”
