Elisabeth Kruger

For Elisabeth Kruger, the inspiration for her paintings starts in her own garden. Kruger is known to paint natural subjects that she has meticulously grown and cultivated. Her large-scale paintings—immersive views of flowers and fruits—are rendered with signature photorealistic precision. She has also made more abstract work, as in the case of her “Mirror Gul” pieces (2001), in which Kruger paints flowers and their mirrored reflections in a kaleidoscopic manner. She sees her flora as metaphors for personal relationships and the cycles of a human experience. In her words, “The issue is not to render the natural world, but to raise questions and ideas about our relationship to it.”
