Considered a pioneer of early photographic collage along with her husband Robert Michel, Ella Bergmann-Michel is known for her involvement in multiple European art movements, as well as her witty and enthusiastic approach to exploring the intersection between art and technology. Her style touched upon Constructivism, Surrealism, and Dada, among others; she was also associated with the Bauhaus shortly after it was founded. Throughout the 1920s she primarily created abstract ink drawings and collages, focusing later, in the 1930s, on documentary films. After World War II, Bergmann-Michel travelled widely as a lecturer and advocate for abstract art, though her work increasingly featured references to science and technology.
