Biography

Ellen de Meutter paints from memory, drawing on images and emotions from her Flemish childhood. The cartoonish shapes and figures that populate her canvases are rendered with a combination of thick, textured brushstrokes and quick, translucent sweeps. The works in de Meutter’s collection “Oost West Thuis Best” (There’s No Place Like Home) parody what the artist posits as Flemish chauvinism—paintings such as Spiegelbeeld (2011), depicting a woman looking wryly at a reflection of her own posterior, reflect the irony of the title.
