Biography

Ellen Gronemeyer’s fictional portraits evoke whimsical caricature and the grotesque. Her thickly-layered, small-scale paintings would feel somber if not for an apparent glow that is emitted, a result of the artist’s technique, in which she starts with layers of bright colors, followed by layers of darker colors, namely blacks and grays. Gronemeyer combines an almost comic distortion with pictorial conventions to create her distinctive images, which variously recall Georges Rouault or Jean Dubuffet in their range of cartoonish to abstract styles.
