Emma Hack
Australian, b. 1972
Emma Hack is based in South Australia working in the medium of body paint installation and photography. Exhibiting extensively throughout Australia since 1999, Emma’s astounding artworks have since captured the attention of collectors and art lovers worldwide. Emma Hack creates artwork that symbolises femininity and strength and being 'at one' with nature and our environment through the eye-catching art of painting her muse into wallpaper design and hand painted canvas. Each work takes over 8-15 hours as the model stands in front of the canvas or Florence Broadhurst wallpaper, designs used in her past projects. The camera is set up approximately 5 meters from the model and is the main viewpoint and reference for the 'blend'. Starting at the shoulders Hack uses them as the first reference. Then following down the arms and interior torso, finishing on the face. Not using projection or stencils as she works completely freehand. This result due to the artwork retaining its own quirks and feel, creates movement on the body, rather than a very flat look. There is minimal retouching, the paint strokes and slight cracking from movement can be seen, which really proves the artwork is genuine. Emma Hack’s collaborations with Grammy award-winning musician Gotye resulted in the iconic, award-winning music video for ‘Somebody that I used to know’ which has been viewed by over 800 million people worldwide. Emma has since worked on major artistic commissions for Motor Accident Commission, South Australia where she built a sculpture of 17 bodies, painted as a crashed car, again drawing worldwide attention to her practice. Emma’s commission for the WA Ballet utilised the form of 21 Ballet dancers to create their upcoming program imagery. Her ‘Madame Hanoi’ portrait is currently the largest body art mural in the world, standing at 8m in height, gracing the walls of Celebrity Chef, Nic Watt’s restaurant in Adelaide. Emma’s work is held in collections throughout Australia and overseas.
