Erin Loree
Canadian, b. 1988
Loree’s process involves a slow building up and then removal of paint, creating richly layered surfaces that evoke emotional states and psychic spaces. To create these works, she begins with thin layers of transparent acrylic, over which oil are applied, scraped away, then re-applied, using a variety of tools including rags, squeegees, cardboard and brushes. Each layer is critical because the colour of the layers, and the order in which they are applied, alter how each layer interacts with what exists beneath it. Many of the works evolve over time and surfaces are reworked and disrupted, leaving stains and traces of previous marks. Intention and intuition come together as equal players in Loree’s process. A delicate balance is achieved between consideration and spontaneity, resulting in paintings that fully reveal themselves only upon extended viewing.
