Étienne Gélinas
Canadian
Étienne Gélinas combines different codes within his artworks by engraving them into a thick paste applied onto the primary support. These codes often encompass architectural designs, mechanical plans as well as other technical and mathematical outlines. Such elements are layered in varying transparencies throughout his artworks.
The circle as a symbol has great meaning for Étienne. It has human significance in referencing the clan or circle of friends, but most especially as the idea of perfection. This perfection embodied by the circle exists in another world, not in this imperfect one. Circles also provide greater contrast with the rectangular support and the geometrically linear gestures within the artworks. Étienne has acknowledged the emotional violence that can be created through such strong oppositions and sees it as a type of poetry that promotes an emotional response in the viewer.
Juxtaposition and depth are two critical features of Étienne's work, creating opposition and ambiguity though the rigidity of the geometrical angles he uses. By imposing both order and allowing for spontaneity in his approach, Gélinas creates powerful contrasts between precision and fluidity.
