Evelyn Statsinger made sense of the world around her through drawing, painting, and sculpture. Throughout her seven-decade-long career, she refused to confine her work to any one tradition and experimented with various forms and media. Statsinger first garnered praise for her figurative drawings and photograms, where she pioneered her own process of collaging objects on top of photo paper and exposing it to light in a darkroom. She was associated with the Chicago-based Monster Roster, and along with fellow members Leon Golub, Robert Barnes, and Don Baum, the group drew inspiration from Surrealism and outsider art and went on to influence the Chicago Imagists. Statsinger later began creating more abstract work that drew inspiration from nature. Travels to Mexico and Japan, as well as the landscape near her Michigan studio, all drove her to explore color and form in new ways.
