Fabiana Cruz’s projects are a synesthetic mix of sound and image, and frequently employ one to represent the other. Cruz explains that the use of one material or medium inevitably leads her to think of the other: “This is what happened when I started playing with white paint: I remembered the sound of the cello in Bach’s Suites. Each stroke for each note echoes and stays for a second or two.” These associations manifest in abstract, performative drawings and paintings that Cruz captures and further manipulates using film. In many of her works, she uses multiple cuts or multi-channel video to individually represent instruments in a musical composition. The works tend towards abstraction, with an emphasis on line and color; her music ranges from classical to techno.
