Biography

Frederic and Catherine Sofia, together known as FC Sofia, interrogate the symbols of consumerism, luxury, and fashion in mixed-media artworks composed of fetish objects, otiose gadgets, syringes, bullets, pharmacopoeia, rabbits (a recurring theme), and other materialistic iconography. The objects are a combination of aluminum, resin, leather, fur, bronze, miscellaneous objects purchased online, and a variety of found materials. Occupying a middle ground between contemporary Pop art and more conceptual concerns, the duo’s work employs humor as a facade through which more sinister motives can be explored, mounting a critique of the ways in which consumer goods have been transformed into contemporary idols.
