Félix Bonilla Gerena’s bold, gestural oil paintings draw on the traditions of Abstract Expressionism and Neo-Expressionism, as well as the chromatic and cultural vibrancy of his native Puerto Rico. Large-scale canvases like El Yunque con Olas (2012) and Playa Jobos, La Bajura (2006) fuse abstract and representational elements to convey the buoyancy and festivity of seaside towns. Shades of flowers, umbrellas, and waves pulse in and out of thick, expressive passages of paint. Some works, like Las Amigas del Placer (2010), are more overtly figurative, with groups of nude figures recalling Pablo Picasso’s Les Demoiselles D’Avignon (1907) or Paul Gauguin’s Mahana No Atua (Day of the God) (1894).
