Biography

Ferdinand Bol worked at the studio of Rembrandt van Rijn before setting up his own atelier at the age of 26 as an independent master. At first, his style was so indebted to that of his teacher’s that people frequently mistook Bol’s work for Rembrandt’s. Bol quickly developed his own distinctive style, however, which could be identified by his use of many colors and elegance in form. Over the course of his career, his palette lightened as well. Bol produced mostly portraits and history paintings, and he still paid indirect tribute to Rembrandt by selecting similar subjects in similar compositions. The last known work that Bol produced was dated 1669, and it is widely assumed that he stopped painting in an early retirement.
