Biography

The French-born Fernand Fonssagrives (1910-2003) was a pioneer in "beauty" photography. A onetime dancer, he took up photography while recuperating from an injury, when his first wife, Lisa, gave him a Rolleiflex camera. "It became," he said, "part of my body." He went on to become one of the preeminent fashion photographers of his day, and she, a famed model. His photographs frequently appeared in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Town & Country. Fonssagrives subsequently expanded his practice to sculpture and painting, as well, and lived the last years of his life in Little Rock, Arkansas.
