Fernando Mastrangelo
b. 1978
The sculptures and furniture designs crafted by Fernando Mastrangelo blend naturally inspired organic textures with sleek geometric shapes, transforming materials like powdered glass, granulated quartz, coffee grounds, resin, and salt. Salt is of particular interest to Mastrangelo due to its contrasting properties of preservation and erosion; he has incorporated the material into rough-hewn objects such as O.G. Drum (2021). He holds a BA from Cornish College of the Arts and an MFA in Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University. Mastrangelo worked as an assistant for the mixed-media artist Matthew Barney before opening his eponymous design studio in 2006. Mastrangelo’s works are held by the Brooklyn Museum and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum; he has been commissioned to create custom pieces and displays by various luxury brands.
