Biography

Describing herself as a floral artist, Fiona Craig paints still lifes of blooming flowers with finely textured petals, leaves, and pollen that reflect her intense attention to detail. Though some of her works, such as Waratahs and Pomegranates, reveal an affinity with Dutch and Spanish nature morte painters of the 16th and 17th centuries, most of her paintings are more scrutinizing, resembling film close-ups. In her oversize naturalistic painting Matisse Roses, Craig depicts variegated red and white roses, obliquely referencing Matisse’s cutouts and his famous painting The Red Studio (1911). “I often depict flora that have cultural and historical allusions, such as the iconic New South Wales state emblem, the waratah,” says Craig. “A couple of my favorites are flowers that even caused ‘maladies’ when they first appeared on the European scene (e.g., Tulipomania and Orchid Fever), the tulip and the orchid.”
